How to Switch Password Managers in 15 Minutes (Without Losing Anything)
By PasswordPick editors · Updated 2026-10-08
Step 1 — export from the old manager. In 1Password: File → Export (1PUX/CSV). Bitwarden: Tools → Export vault (.json). Chrome: passwords.google.com → Settings → Export. Save to your desktop, never email or cloud it.
Step 2 — import into the new manager. Bitwarden: Tools → Import → pick the format. Proton Pass and 1Password both accept CSV/1PUX and rival exports directly. A few hundred logins import in under a minute.
Step 3 — verify before deleting anything. Spot-check 10 important logins (email, bank, Apple/Google), confirm TOTP codes and passkeys moved (some need re-enrollment — passkeys often can't export), and run the new manager alongside the old for a week.
Step 4 — secure the old vault. Only after a clean week: delete old vault data, revoke old sessions and browser extensions, and delete the plaintext export file (then empty trash). Shred, don't hoard.
Common gotchas: attachments and file storage rarely migrate (re-upload manually); shared/family vaults need re-sharing; business SSO needs admin re-linking. Budget 30 minutes for teams, 15 for individuals.
Switching because of a breach or price hike? Our comparisons (1Password vs Bitwarden, Bitwarden vs Proton Pass) map exactly which vault fits exiles from each camp.
