How to Import Passwords Into a Password Manager (Chrome, CSV, 1Password)
By PasswordPick editors · Updated 2026-10-08
From Chrome/Edge: export at passwords.google.com (or edge://settings/passwords) as CSV, then import via your manager's Tools → Import → Chrome CSV. Takes two minutes for most people.
From iCloud/Safari: on Mac, System Settings → General → Import from Safari into the Passwords app, or export for a third-party manager. iPhone-only users: add the new manager's AutoFill provider first (Settings → General → AutoFill & Passwords).
From a CSV file: every manager here accepts generic CSV (url, username, password columns). Bitwarden, 1Password and Proton Pass all auto-detect column layouts; fix the odd mislabeled row after import rather than perfecting the file first.
From a rival manager: use native formats when offered (1PUX for 1Password preserves folders/tags; Bitwarden JSON preserves TOTP seeds). Generic CSV is the fallback — it carries logins but drops attachments and history.
When imports fail: check file encoding (UTF-8), strip empty rows, split files over ~2,000 rows, and confirm you're importing into the right vault/collection. Duplicates after a retry? Most managers have a built-in duplicate cleaner — don't hand-delete hundreds of rows.
After importing: run the password-health report, change reused/breached passwords starting with email and banking, enable 2FA on the vault, and delete the plaintext CSV immediately.
